The Museo Sa Bassa Blanca celebrates International Museum Day by bringing the “Nins” collection to Alcúdia Ràdio listeners

Alcudia Radio Museu Sa Bassa

To mark International Museum Day, celebrated yesterday, 18 May, Alcúdia Ràdio dedicated a special segment to one of the Museo Sa Bassa Blanca’s most distinctive collections: Nins, a group of children’s portraits from the 16th to the 19th centuries held by the Yannick and Ben Jakober Foundation in Alcúdia.

The interview, broadcast on the programme Alcúdia Avui, featured Yannick Vu, artist and co-founder of the museum, in conversation with Gudi Moragues, art critic and historian. The discussion brought listeners closer to the history, artistic value and symbolic dimension of this collection, regarded as one of the most original in Europe for its perspective on childhood through painting.

Displayed in the former cistern of the Museo Sa Bassa Blanca, the Nins exhibition brings together more than 150 portraits of children from different European countries. Most of the works depict members of royalty, the nobility, and the bourgeoisie during childhood, offering a journey through the social, family and political codes of early modern Europe. Through the clothing, toys, accessories and allegorical elements shown in the paintings, the collection reveals how the image of the child was used not only as a family keepsake, but also as a means of representing lineage, status and dynastic alliances.

During the interview, the conversation highlighted the importance of preserving and sharing this heritage, particularly on a date dedicated to recognising the role of museums as spaces for encounter, learning, and dialogue. In the case of the Museo Sa Bassa Blanca, this mission takes place in an exceptional setting, integrated into nature and declared a biological reserve, where art, architecture, and landscape coexist inseparably.

International Museum Day therefore offered an opportunity to rediscover Nins from an accessible and informative perspective, inviting both residents and visitors to come to the museum and explore a collection that speaks of childhood, memory, power and artistic sensitivity.

Through this radio appearance, the Museo Sa Bassa Blanca reinforces its commitment to cultural outreach and to opening its collections to the public, keeping alive the spirit of the Yannick and Ben Jakober Foundation: preserving heritage, sharing knowledge and encouraging access to art for all generations.
